Day in the life of a volunteer – By Hannah Kelly (Physiotherapist from the UK)
“Hi my name is Hannah and I am a Children’s Physiotherapist from England. I came to SCDI in November 2024 and absolutely love it here!
My day to day life whilst working here consists of getting the bus from Maji ya Chai (where I am staying with Yuster and her family). The bus is 1 hour long with a walk either side, but it is a lovely way to see the city. I arrive to the center around 9am and begin Physio sessions with the children. The kids have their first meal around 10am of maize porridge. I do 1:1 Physio with individual children in our newly decorated therapy room. And also, sessions outside with the staff and parents. This includes practicing on the parallel bars and using the standing frame. We break for lunch around 1-2pm, usually rice and beans or Mama Lau’s delicious pilau rice! Physio sessions continue in the afternoon whilst the other kids play or spend time learning with teacher Loyce of playing with the staff or each other. The kids leave from anywhere between 3-5pm. I then get the bus back home.
On Friday’s we conduct home visits to those children who live too far from the center to provide them with advice, support, Physio and food packages.
The children are amazing and in desperate need of all the support they can get. Yuster the founder is an incredible woman who pours so much time, effort and love into this charity and deserves all the recognition she can get.
I would highly recommend working for this amazing charity if you get the opportunity.”
